Average Calculator

“Average” usually means the mean, but homework often asks for all three averages — mean, median and mode — plus the range. Paste your numbers and get all four with the working.

Answer

Mean 82.5

Median 85 · Mode 85 · Range 35

Step by step

  1. Mean: add them up — 72 + 85 + 90 + 85 + 64 + 99 = 495. Divide by how many there are (6): 495 ÷ 6 = 82.5.
  2. Median: sort them — 64, 72, 85, 85, 90, 99. With 6 values there are two middle ones (85 and 85); their average is 85.
  3. Mode: 85 appears most often (2 times).
  4. Range: largest − smallest = 99 − 64 = 35.

How it works

Meansum of values ÷ number of values
Medianmiddle value once sorted
Modemost frequent value
Rangelargest − smallest

The mean shares the total out equally. It is pulled around by extreme values: one very high score raises it a lot.

The median is the middle of the sorted list, so a single extreme value barely moves it. That is why house prices and incomes are usually reported as medians.

The mode is the value that appears most often. A list can have no mode, one mode, or several.

The range measures spread, not the centre.

Worked example

Test scores: 72, 85, 90, 85, 64, 99.

  1. Sum = 495, 495 ÷ 6 = 82.5 (mean)
  2. Sorted: 64, 72, 85, 85, 90, 99 → median (85 + 85) ÷ 2 = 85
  3. Mode 85 · Range 99 − 64 = 35

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the average?

Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 4, 7 and 10 is 21 ÷ 3 = 7.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the total shared equally; the median is the middle value when sorted. They are equal for symmetric data and differ when there are extreme values.

What score do I need to get a certain average?

Multiply the target average by the total number of tests, then subtract the scores you already have. For an 80 average over 4 tests with 75, 82 and 78 so far: 320 − 235 = 85.
