Long Division Calculator

Long division breaks a big division into small ones you can do in your head, one digit at a time. The steps below follow the same pattern your teacher uses: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.

Answer

621

Step by step

  1. 12 doesn’t go into 7; write 0 (or nothing) and carry on.
  2. Bring down 4 → 74. 12 goes into 74 6 times: 6 × 12 = 72; 74 − 72 = 2.
  3. Bring down 5 → 25. 12 goes into 25 2 times: 2 × 12 = 24; 25 − 24 = 1.
  4. Bring down 2 → 12. 12 goes into 12 1 time: 1 × 12 = 12; 12 − 12 = 0.
  5. No digits left. Quotient 621, remainder 0.
  6. Check: 621 × 12 + 0 = 7452.

How it works

Checkquotient × divisor + remainder = dividend

Divide: how many times does the divisor go into the current number? Write that digit on top.

Multiply that digit by the divisor and write the result underneath.

Subtract to find what is left over. It must be smaller than the divisor, or your digit was too small.

Bring down the next digit and repeat. When there are no digits left, what remains is the remainder.

A memory trick for the order: Does McDonald’s Sell Burgers? — Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down.

Worked example

Work out 7452 ÷ 12.

  1. 12 into 74 → 6 (72), remainder 2
  2. Bring down 5 → 25: 2 (24), remainder 1
  3. Bring down 2 → 12: 1 (12), remainder 0 → 621

Frequently asked questions

How do you do long division step by step?

Repeat four moves for each digit: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. The digits you write on top form the answer.

What do I do with the remainder?

Write it as R and the number (621 R 3), as a fraction over the divisor (621 3/12 = 621 1/4), or keep dividing with zeros after a decimal point.
