Percentage Decrease Calculator

Take a percentage off a number, or measure how far something has fallen in percentage terms — test scores, prices, populations, battery life.

Answer

220

250 decreased by 12% is 220 (−30)

Step by step

  1. Find 12% of 250: 0.12 × 250 = 30.
  2. Subtract it: 250 − 30 = 220.
  3. Shortcut: multiply by 0.88 (that is 100% − 12%): 250 × 0.88 = 220.

How it works

Decrease by P%number × (1 − P ÷ 100)
Percent decrease(old − new) ÷ old × 100

After a 12% decrease you are left with 88% of the original, so multiplying by 0.88 does it in one step.

For the percent decrease between two values, divide the drop by the original (bigger, earlier) value — not the new one.

A decrease followed by the same percentage increase does not get you back: 100 − 20% = 80, but 80 + 20% = 96.

Worked example

A school had 250 students and now has 200. What is the percent decrease?

  1. 250 − 200 = 50
  2. 50 ÷ 250 = 0.2
  3. 0.2 × 100 = 20% decrease

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage decrease?

Subtract the new value from the old value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100.

How do I take a percentage off a number?

Multiply by (100 − percentage) ÷ 100. To take 12% off 250, multiply by 0.88 to get 220.

Can a decrease be more than 100%?

Not for an amount that can’t go below zero: a 100% decrease leaves nothing. For values that can go negative, like a bank balance, the maths still works but the wording gets unusual.
