How it works

Increase by P%number × (1 + P ÷ 100)
Percent increase(new − old) ÷ old × 100

Increasing by a percentage means you keep all of the original (100%) and add the extra percentage on top. That is why a 15% increase is the same as multiplying by 1.15.

To find the percent increase between two values, subtract to get the increase, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100.

Two increases in a row do not simply add: +10% then +10% is ×1.1 × 1.1 = ×1.21, a 21% increase overall.

Worked example

A $24 meal plus an 18% tip — what is the total?

  1. 18% of 24 = 0.18 × 24 = 4.32
  2. 24 + 4.32 = 28.32
  3. Or in one step: 24 × 1.18 = $28.32

Frequently asked questions

How do I increase a number by a percentage?

Multiply the number by 1 plus the percentage as a decimal. To increase 60 by 15%, multiply 60 × 1.15 = 69.

How do I work out percentage increase?

Subtract the original from the new value, divide the result by the original, then multiply by 100. From 60 to 75: 15 ÷ 60 × 100 = 25%.

Is a 100% increase the same as doubling?

Yes. A 100% increase adds the whole original amount again, so the result is twice the starting value. A 200% increase triples it.
